On Wednesday, I attended the first meeting of the American Workforce Policy Advisory Board. I am thrilled to be joined on the board by Jay Box, president of Kentucky Community and Technical College System, and Sheree Utash, president of Wichita State University Campus of Applied Sciences and Technology in Kansas. During the meeting, one thing became very clear: industry leaders recognize the value of community colleges in helping to close the skills gap. Lockheed Martin CEO Marillyn Hewson and IBM CEO Ginni Rometty highlighted working with community colleges on apprenticeships and Apple CEO Tim Cook talked about a partnership with Austin Community College (Texas) in developing coding skills. Video from the meeting is available opens in a new windowhere. I’m honored to be on the advisory board and to help represent community colleges.
