On Thursday, I sent out an email about the U.S. Department of Education’s opens in a new windowannouncement about the new $198 million grant funds and new guidance on the use of American Rescue Plan funds. I’d like to reiterate how grateful we at AACC are for your advocacy and for the work you do everyday for the students you serve.
Next week, AACC will host its annual Workforce Development Institute. Community college workforce leaders will be joined by industry partners and representatives from federal agencies to reimagine workforce development. With supply chain disruptions in the news almost daily, it’s no surprise that companies (and the country) are looking to community colleges to rapidly train workers for jobs in transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, and more. Though our colleges have been providing training for this work for a long time, it’s important to look at how those jobs are evolving – and how employees are changing, too. How can programming and curriculum at our institutions change as well?
We’ve talked about the “future of workforce development” for a long time. Well, the future is here and we must be positioned to meet it head on.

AACC has partnered with the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGIU) to bring community colleges and their students the opportunity to work together with students from across the world to develop solutions to pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges. For the first time, AACC member colleges will serve as the host institution for the virtual global gathering of Clinton Scholars later this spring. CGIU student scholars will have access to topic experts and influential leaders as they develop Commitments to Action to address issues like the pandemic, poverty, food, and housing insecurity, and climate change. Students can apply or be nominated. Students are encouraged to attend one of the opens in a new windowprospective student sessions.
