In many traditional settings, activity in the office slows down prior to a holiday. As AACC approaches the upcoming Labor Day holiday, it is quite the opposite. As you may know, AACC has been a staunch supporter of progression in nursing while advocating that the Associate Degree in Nursing remain the degree for entry to practice. I was delighted to be asked to join the National Advisory Board for the Social Mission of Nursing Education study convened by The George Washington University with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The advisory group had its first meeting on August 27 and was attended by a number of individuals committed to the field of nursing, including but not limited to Drs. Beverly Malone, president and CEO of the National League of Nursing, Suzanne Miyamoto, chief policy officer for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Kathleen Gravens, nursing program director at Lakeland Community College, Marsha Atkins, dean of nursing at Northern Virginia Community College, and Ms. Donna Meyer, CEO of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. The meeting was staffed by Dr. Ashley Darcy-Mahoney. The dialogue was extremely stimulating, and I am encouraged that the report from the advisory board will yield solid recommendations to guide the social mission of nursing for the coming years.
