On Monday, I had the pleasure of meeting with Rep. Virginia Foxx to discuss the PROSPER Act. We articulated to the Congresswoman those areas of the legislation that concern community colleges. The biggest takeaway is that the PROSPER Act is not set in stone. Rep. Foxx emphasized that she is open to hearing thoughts about the bill from stakeholders—particularly community college advocates. You can read more about the meeting below.
In closing, I know that many of you either watched the State of the Union address or had the opportunity to read the article in Inside Higher Education today regarding President Trump’s comments about the need for vocational schools. Ironically, I am just returning from a very successful Workforce Development Institute, where we had an enormous focus on the very programs in which the president referenced. We were joined by Department of Labor Senior Policy Advisor Diane Jones in signing a significant MOU for apprenticeship training. My plan in the coming days is to engage with the White House staff to provide information on the important role that community and technical colleges play in the economic and workforce development of our country.
