When AACC began the Awards of Excellence program six years ago, our goal was to honor the visionary work of community colleges in advancing the student success agenda. Being able to hold up the award-winning colleges as examples of innovative, student-centric institutions has been one of my greatest joys. This week, AACC named the finalists for the 2018 Awards of Excellence. Congratulations to the finalists!
AACC will also recognize outstanding community college faculty at this year’s convention. The new Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty honor allows the association to celebrate the hard work of these classroom heroes. You can learn more about the Distinguished Faculty below.
“Developing a Workforce for Energy Infrastructure Jobs”
The nation’s energy infrastructure faces workforce challenges as demand for energy grows. That was a main topic of conversation Tuesday at a House Energy Subcommittee hearing on the nation’s energy infrastructure. Brenda Hellyer, chancellor of San Jacinto College, spoke at the hearing about her college’s efforts to meet workforce demands. Read about it in CC Daily.

AACC has announced the 2018 Awards of Excellence finalists. You can view all the finalists in the six categories here. And check out the 50 community college faculty members who will be recognized at the Dale P. Parnell Distinguished Faculty Reception.
CEO Compensation Survey
AACC is conducting a survey to obtain a better understanding of the compensation of community college presidents and their perspectives on key issues of today. Today, you received an email with a link to the survey and we ask that you please take the time to complete it. AACC will develop a report based on the information from the survey and make it available to all members. We anticipate presenting the findings from the study at the 98th Annual Convention. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Meeting on U.S.-China Relations
On February 20, Senior Vice President Mary Heiss and I attended a meeting convened by the American Council on Education (ACE) to discuss the complexities of the relationship between the United States and China. The State Department has interest in better understanding how American institutions operate in China and the experiences of Chinese students who study in the U.S.

The Hail & Farewell Luncheon honors retiring CEOs, as well as new and 25-year CEOs. If you fit into one of these categories, submit a form by March 12 so AACC can recognize you. The Hail & Farewell program will take place at AACC’s convention.

Summer will be here before you know, and so will the Presidents Academy Summer Institute (PASI). Join AACC in Dana Point, California, July 21–24 for this professional development opportunity. PASI is for CEOs of community colleges, providing intensive focus on current challenges, emerging trends, and opportunities unique to that position.
Highlights
Members of the AACC Executive Leadership Team (ELT) joined me in meeting with Ivy Tech Community College President Sue Ellspermann, Mary Jane Michalak, vice president of government relations at Ivy Tech, and Jennifer L. Ping, principal at Bose Public Affairs Group.
On February 21, the AACC Executive Leadership Team and I were pleased to welcome Acting Assistant Secretary of Education Dr. Michael Wooten to the AACC office.
