Caleb Sierra crossed the stage at Springfield Technical Community College’s (STCC) 59th Commencement ceremony in May 2026 carrying the legacy of a family whose educational journey began at STCC.
For Sierra, STCC isn’t just a place where he received a degree and held leadership roles – it’s part of his family’s story.
Sierra’s mother, Veronica Garcia, is a 2012 STCC graduate. His brother and extended family members also attended STCC.
Sierra graduated from STCC with a degree in Business Transfer. The 21-year-old starts at the prestigious Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, this fall. STCC’s Business Transfer program is a specially designed transfer program designed to meet the Mass Transfer Associate-to-Bachelor’s (A2B) Pathways requirements of the Massachusetts public colleges and universities and the University of Massachusetts system.
Originally drawn to business because of his entrepreneurial family, Sierra quickly discovered that his interests extended far beyond one field.
One of the most impactful experiences came through a Commonwealth Honors course in Philosophy of Science taught by professor John Diffley. Experiences like that broadened his perspective and encouraged him to explore new academic and career paths.
He served as Business Club president and as a student trustee. He balanced those leadership responsibilities and academics with work.
“I’ve grown a lot – in knowledge, in experience and in meeting so many people,” he said. “I’m still experimenting with my abilities and discovering new ones.”
Sierra secured his first internship during his first semester – an experience that helped launch his professional journey. Today, he works as a clerk at a law firm in downtown Springfield, gaining real-world experience that complements his academic interests.
He looks forward to studying business at the Isenberg School of Management, while keeping future options open, whether that means earning an MBA or pursuing law school.
“STCC has really given me the push to not settle,” he said.
