AACC Education for Sustainable Development Collaboration

1. Education for Sustainable Development Initiative

The United Nations has declared a Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014). As part of the U.S. higher education response, AACC and the Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF) have formed a new partnership to promote activities about education for sustainable development among AACC member institutions and affiliated councils. View the AACC Board of Directors Resolution in Support of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

6. Who is this AACC partner? The Association of University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF – www.ulsf.org) is the leading U.S. based non-profit organization strengthening higher education’s capacity to make sustainable development a major focus of college and university missions, curricula, research, student life, service, community/global partnerships and operations. ULSF has taken the lead in outreaching to National Higher Education Associations to form partnerships that will infuse education for sustainable development throughout higher education via the U.S. Partnership. The U.S. Partnership for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (www.uspartnership.org) is a non-partisan volunteer partnership of organizations in the United States formed to foster education for sustainable development throughout the nation. Any college can become a partner for no charge.  Over 15 mainstream national higher education associations are engaged in education for sustainable development via publications, presentations and/or national initiatives. View more information.

“The American Perspective

There is special urgency that the education for sustainable development blossom in the United States. The extent to which we, the people of the United States, adopt and embrace the principles of sustainable development may well determine the quality of life that our nation and all humanity enjoy in the decades ahead. Around the world, billions of people seek what we have. At 5% of the world’s population, we consume 25% of the world’s resources. Now, as responsible leaders, we can show new paths to future prosperity for ourselves and for all.” (U.S. Partnership document to Higher Education Associations)
