 Session Descriptions 

Session A: The President and Spouse Team
(For presidents and spouses/partners)

The presenters will lead a discussion on the roles of the president and the spouse and expectations for the engagement of the spouse in college and community events.

Facilitators:

  • Marie Foster Gnage, President, West Virginia University at Parkersburg
  • David Gnage, Chancellor, Penn State Mont Alto, PA

Session B: The Upside of the Downside

The presenters will provide some ideas about leading during challenging economic times, including how it is easier to make some decisions that can strengthen the college in the long term.

Facilitators:

  • Thelma White, President, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, KY
  • Christa Adams, President, Owens Community College, OH

Session C: CEO/Board Relations and The CEO Employment Contract

The presenters will review important components of a good CEO employment contract and will discuss ways to maintain positive Board/CEO relations.

Facilitators:

  • David Armstrong, President, Broward College, FL
  • Desna Wallin, Professor, University of Georgia, and AACC Leadership Consultant      

Session D:  Discussion of Case Studies

The presenters will lead a discussion of some realistic case studies and how they relate to issues on the campuses of attendees.

Facilitators:

  • Michael Burke, President, San Jose City College, CA

Session E: Focus on Foundations

The presenters, representing major national foundations, will discuss why they are focused on community colleges and what they are doing to help the colleges to improve student success and completion rates.

  • Diane Troyer, Program Officer, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, WA

Session F:  Equity Gap

The presenters will address current inequities in our society and what community colleges can do to close these equity gaps.

  • Joe Forrester, President, Community College of Beaver County, PA
  • Gwen Stephenson, President, Hillsborough Community College, FL

Session H:  Fund Raising and Friend Raising

The presenters will discuss the role of the president in creating friends of the college and in raising private funds.

Facilitators:

  • E. Ann McGee, President, Seminole Community College, FL
  • Jean Goodnow, President, Delta College, MI

Session I: Crisis Management (Or How to Stay Cool When You're on the Hot Seat)

The presenters will discuss the importance of being prepared for crises and what presidents need to do when a crisis occurs.

  • Shirley Reed, President, South Texas College

Session L: Achieving Balance

Attendees will participate in a discussion of how they achieve balance in their lives and lessons they have learned through experience.
