 Maureen Dunne

Rhodes Scholar
College of DuPage, IL

Maureen Dunne’s interest in working with children with developmental disabilities was sparked by an internship she had when at College of DuPage. She began working with a 5-year-old child with autism while on a co-op program. The progress this child made during the year they worked together had an enormous impact.

Currently a Rhodes Scholar in Oxford, England, Maureen is performing research into the unique thinking style of children with autism. Her scholarly pursuits are interdisciplinary, spanning developmental psychology, philosophy, social anthropology and linguistics.

She founded and is executive director of R.E.A.C.H., a nonprofit organization that promotes public awareness of autism and offers educational services to children and families with autism or related developmental disabilities. Maureen plans to continue her research and teach at a university with a fellowship she was awarded from the National Science Foundation. Her plan is to apply research in developmental psychology to social programs and social policies affecting children and families.
