 George Miller

U.S. House of Representatives
Diablo Valley College, California

Diablo Valley Community College, in California, helped put George Miller on the path that eventually led to law school and the U.S. Congress.

His experiences as a community college student gave him a perspective that he now uses to help shape legislation that benefits millions of people.  He own  "second chance" at  Diablo Valley made a huge difference in his life as he now works to make a difference in the lives of others.

After Diablo Valley, Miller transferred to San Francisco State University and got his law degree from the University of California, Davis. He has represented the 7th district of California, which includes San Francisco's East Bay, since 1975.

In Congress, Miller is a leader in education, labor and environmental issues. He is the ranking Democrat on the House Education and Workforce Committee, and a member of the House Resources Committee.

Miller was instrumental in revising and passing education reform legislation that is known as The No Child Left Behind Act. Miller was one of four legislators who stood with President Bush when he signed the act in January.

Bipartisanship aside, Miller is critical of the proposed education budget, urging  education reform and  $10 billion more in education spending.

Miller is also sponsoring a bill that would reduce the cost of federal student loan programs. While the recession has tightened all governmental budgets, Miller predicts the economic slowdown will make community colleges even more important to the nation's fiscal recovery.
