Results of AACC NAHI Survey (Adobe PDF) - According to 420 associate degree nursing programs that responded to the NAHI Survey conducted earlier this year, nursing school enrollments are stunted due to a lack of qualified faculty, clinical, classroom, and lab space, and preceptors. Survey respondents reported a 16 percent increase in the number of new students admitted to ADN programs between fall 2001 and 2002 with increases seen in all regions and urbanicity settings. Reports and Studies: National Commission on Nursing Workforce for Long Term Care releases recommendations to stabilize the LTC nursing workforce. On May 19, 2005, the National Commission on Nursing Workforce for Long Term Care released its report making recommendations for state and federal initiatives to recruit additional and retain nurses and aides already practicing in long term care environments. The Commission state-level recommendations included creating working partnerships between long-term care organizations, community colleges, nursing colleges, workforce investment boards and state government agencies to increase the supply and availability of nurses and nurse aides in long-term care and increase state general fund appropriations for nursing education at community colleges and baccalaureate programs with specific support for training new nurses in long-term care sites. The Commission’s federal-level recommendations include creating a broad long-term care nursing workforce coordinating workgroup of national long-term care, nurse education, nursing, public workforce and other organizations to support development of national policies and programs that specifically address the long-term care nursing shortage. Federal Resources and Other Organizations: American Nurses Association - A professional organization representing the nation's 2.6 million Registered Nurses through its 54 constituent state associations and 13 organizational affiliate members. HRSA Bureau of Health Professions - The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) advises the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Congress on policy issues related to the Title VIII programs administered by the HRSA Bureau of Health Professions Division of Nursing, including nurse workforce supply, education and practice improvement. National Institute of Nursing Research - Supports clinical and basic research to establish a scientific basis for the care of individuals across the life span-from management of patients during illness and recovery to the reduction of risks for disease and disability, the promotion of healthy lifestyles, promoting quality of life in those with chronic illness, and care for individuals at the end of life.
