In December 2003, AACC selected eight community colleges to create and support replicable and sustainable models of service learning in the areas of education, public safety, human needs, homeland security, and the environment.
Horizons mentee colleges included:
A team of four experienced service learning practitioners served as mentors to the Horizons mentee colleges.
Horizons mentor colleges included:
During the course of this project, participants at the eight Horizons mentee colleges made a significant impact on their communities. Service learning was incorporated into 162 courses for the first time. Total figures reported by the colleges indicate that 5,185 students performed 49,254 hours of direct community service, worked with 523 faculty and administrators, and affected 598 agencies and schools and approximately 248,438 individuals.
