Program Description

The Male Outreach Initiative (MOI) is designed to reach out to the community and encourage male students in our community to graduate from high school and enroll in college. MOI is a comprehensive program comprised of partnerships with male students, middle and high school officials, community leaders and College faculty/administrators.  A major focus of the program includes responsibility, leadership, and respect.
The ultimate goal is to create an environment in which male students may network, gain opportunities, graduate, and find jobs within their respective fields. Additionally, the program is designed to help students with opportunities in career assessment, mentoring, financial needs, and academic support while fostering an educational environment where students have the support to gain the proper etiquette for success at SPC and in the future.

Program Initiated

St. Petersburg College's Board of Trustee's initiated this project as they realized the number of male students participating in the graduation ceremony. The Trustee's were determined to increase the number of male students enrolled at the College that they included male outreach and support to the College's Strategic Initiative and Objectives. We completed our research on serving males and instituted the outreach program.

Program Funded

The Program is not grant funded and operations with re-occurring dollars in the general College budget. Student activities funds are used to provide activities, programs, and services for male students.

College President and Administrators Involvement

While the Trustees initiated the program, the President took it a step further and reached out to a struggling high school with a high population of under-prepared male students. Through his leadership, we offered free placement testing, career services, dual credit courses and other support services to this high school. The College President and other administrators promote and support the program by mentoring students and serving as guest presenters. The program is greatly supported.
