El Centro College's African American and Latino Male Initiative is a program to help El Centro College's African American and Latino males overcome barriers that impede their academic success.

Program Initiated

A program funded through Dallas County Community College District (DCCCD) Retention Award.  The program is based on a model initiated through the American Association of Community Colleges African American Presidents' Roundtable, to address the issue of the diminishing number of African American males entering higher education.

Program Funded

$100,000 DCCCD award and $70,000 Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) grant- Latino males were included.

College President and Administrators Involvement

Our college president has attended a meeting and is always available for guidance regarding the program. Our college administrators are mentors to the students in our programs. They regularly attend the meetings and offer support.

Program Success Story

Many of our students are quite involved with the program. They have grown closer as fellow students. They have improved their communication skills and have a more positive outlook on life.
