Program Description

The Medgar Evers College Black Male Initiative (BMI) is a targeted GED and college-preparatory program in Central Brooklyn which annually serves an average of 300 Black and Latino males and females – a population typically underrepresented and underserved in higher education.  The program provides a unique rotational module for GED preparation, college readiness workshops, group mentorship that encourages, motivates and provides peer leadership to students, health and personal development activities, a stand-alone math class, and a college preparation class that strengthens the pipeline from school to college.

Program Success Story

The BMI program was successful in achieving its second Peter Jennings Laurel Award for a BMI participant. The awardee, Mr. Phillip Parris, scored 3,450 out of 4,000 on his GED examination. Mr. Parris is currently a student at Medgar Evers College and was inducted into Pi Eta Kappa Honor Society in April 2009 with a 3.8 GPA. Mr. Parris is a part of the Adult Education Alumni Alliance (AEAA) and serves as an intern in the Mayor’s Office.

Since its inception in 2003, the GED Center at Medgar Evers College has received a total of seven Peter Jennings Laurel Award GED Scholarships, two of which were awarded to BMI students. Of these, one later graduated Cum Laude with a BA in Liberal Arts, and one graduated with an Associate degree.
