Program Description

Mission: To foster academic and professional excellence among first-time African-American male college students and first-generation African-American male college students

Objectives:
• Assist first-time African-American male college students making a successful academic and social adjustment to Indian River State College;
• Pair outstanding first-year African-American male college students with first-generation African-American male college students;
• Encourage early contact with administrators, faculty, and staff;
• Provide first-year African-American male college students and sophomores with advice on professional development, career pathways, and baccalaureate programs and
• Assist students in planning and fulfilling their educational and professional goals.

Mentoring Strategies:
• Incoming first-generation African-American male college students will be paired with outstanding first-year African-American male college students in their similar interests fields who are committed to the Indian River State College experience and are involved in activities and organizations on campus;
• First-generation African-American male college students, first-year African-American male college students, and sophomores will be paired with administrators, faculty and staff ; and
• Sophomores will be paired with a professional mentor in their field of study.

In August of 2008 the college focused on the enrollment, retention, and completion of the African-American students at the institution.

Program Funded

The program is funded by donations by the Mentors and club account furnished by the institution.

College President and Administrators Involvement

The college president and staff are highly supportive. The college identified the need for a retention effort for this population of students. The administration participates as mentors and advisors.

Program Success Story

John Cesar, current IRSC psychology student, began his college career with little direction and guidance and with his participation in AAMLI, John has excelled in his leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills that will help him in his future. John states that “AAMLI and IRSC have prepared me to be a highly productive citizen!”
