Program Description

The Minority Male Mentoring Program has a two fold purpose:

First, the Minority Male Mentoring Center is designed to provide assistance, advice, and direction to any currently enrolled minority male student.  We also provide counseling and cultural understanding to all students, faculty and staff.

Secondly, the mission of the NEXT LEVEL Program is to equip young men with the skills necessary to reach the highest echelons of academic, professional, and personal development.  We achieve this goal by "intrusively mentoring" a core group of students.

Program Initiated

This program was initiated through a competitive grant process.  Dr. Donald Spell, VP of Student Services created a grant proposal to receive funding through the Minority Male Mentoring Grant.

Program Funded

The grant was funded by state funding.  The school receives $30,000 each year for a maximum of two years.  After the grant period expires, the college is encouraged to continue funding of the program.  Currently Pitt Community College is funding the program.

College President and Administrators Involvement

All of the administrators are supportive of the program.  Our President attends many of our events and has highlighted the program as a means of meeting Goal 1 (Engagement and Access) of the College's Strategic Plan.

Our VP's have all been supportive as well.  Our VP of Student Services as well as the Assistant VP have been crucial in providing funding, ideas, and opportunities to highlight the mission of this program.  The VP's of our various academic departments have collaborated with us by providing workshops and seminars.

Program Success Story

"I was having problems with math and history, as well as problems at home.  The NEXT LEVEL Program helped me to regain my focus and make better choices.  Now I am an A student with my own apartment and job."--Sherman Parker
