Program Description

The STCC-MILE (Male Initiative for Leadership & Education Mentoring Program at STCC) program is a program designed to provide academic support, mentoring, and community engagement opportunities, to Black and Latino male students at Springfield technical Community College.  The program will connect student participants with professionals to serve as mentors throughout the student’s time at the college. The program will consist of 1:1 mentoring, group mentoring, skill building workshops, community service, tutoring sessions, and advising.

The goals the STCC-MILE program will be to:
 
1. Increase retention rates of Black and Latino males at STCC.
2. Connect students with professionals and/or faculty to serve as mentors to students
3. Engage the students in workshops that will provide them the skills they will need to be successful in the classroom.

The MILE (Male Initiative for Leadership & Education) Mentoring Program at STCC, formerly BALSA program was initiated when an Academic Advisor realized that there was a low retention of the Black and Latino male population on campus. Of which many were entering the college not fully prepared. The advisor then began meeting with students who fit this description in a mentoring capacity.

Program Funded

The MILE (Male Initiative for Leadership & Education) Mentoring Program at STCC- is currently funded through the Advising Department within the Division of Student and Multicultural Affairs.

College President and Administrators Involvement

The college's president and other administrators are 100% behind the goals and mission of the initiative. They serve as support both financially and assist in the planning process for activities and special events.
