Program Initiated

The program was initiated after the president and administrators learned that African-American males were not succeeding, particularly in math, at the same rates as other students.  This realization led to efforts geared toward identifying and removing the barriers to the success of African-American males at MDCC.

Program Funded

The Pathfinders Program is funded through a grant for Predominantly Black Institutions via the U. S. Department of Education.

College President and Administrators Involvement

The president was instrumental in securing MDCC’s designation as a Predominantly Black Institution so the college would be eligible for grant funds to support the needs of its growing African-American population.  The president and other administrators integrated the Pathfinders Program into its existing organizational structure by aligning it with its Library and Center of Learning. The program has now expanded throughout the main campus and onto three off-campus sites.

Program Success Story

Many of the Pathfinders participants gain the confidence and skills necessary to persist in their courses and ultimately graduate from MDCC.  Several participants continue their studies at regional 4-year universities with much success.  One former Pathfinder, Jerrick Cheeks, is working toward a bachelor’s degree in Finance at Delta State University. In July 2012, he was awarded the Outstanding Intermediate Finance Award by the College of Business.
