 Teaching by Choice: Addressing the National Teaching Shortage 

With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), AACC, in partnership with the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) and the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), developed Teaching by Choice (TBC):  Addressing the National Teacher Shortage.  TBC is a three-part initiative focusing on the increasing demand for K-12 teachers and community college faculty in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

Publications:

  • Teaching by Choice: Community Colleges Impact K-12 STEM Teaching (Adobe PDF file)
    A 52-page report sponsored by the National Science Foundation, showcases 22 programs at and for community colleges that contribute to the development of teachers in elementary and secondary schools throughout the nation. The programs represent 2+2 transfer programs from community colleges to 4-year colleges and universities, associate degree programs, post-baccalaureate programs for "career switchers," and professional development programs for current K-12 teachers.
  • Teaching by Choice: Community Colleges Expand K–12 STEM Pathways and Practices (Adobe PDF file)
    A 15-page report of recommendations for community college practice in post-baccalaureate teacher education and professional development programs for current and future K–12 teachers in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology, generated during the "Teaching by Choice: Beyond 2+2" conference, convened in Denver, CO in February 2008.
  • Teaching by Choice: Cultivating Exemplary Community College STEM Faculty (Adobe PDF file)
    A 34-page report of recommendations and promising practices in the recruitment, retention, and professional development of exemplary, diverse community college faculty in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, outlined during the Teaching by Choice National Leadership Summit on Community College Faculty, convened in Washington, DC,
    December 12 – 14, 2005.
  • Teaching by Choice: Community College Science and Mathematics Preparation of K-12 Teachers (Adobe PDF File)
    A 35-page report of recommendations for community college K-12 teacher preparation programs developed during the Teaching by Choice national conference, convened in Washington, DC, September 9, 10 & 11, 2004.
