Job Description

SURRY COMMUNITY COLLEGE PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH Following three and one-half (3½) years of meritorious service as President of Surry Community College, Dr. Deborah Friedman has announced her retirement effective May 1, 2011. The Board of Trustees invites applications for the position of President to lead the College's experienced and highly effective administrative team, faculty, and staff in the furtherance of its mission to promote personal growth and community development through excellence in teaching, learning, and service. Established in 1964, Surry Community College is one of the fifty-eight (58) institutions that comprise the North Carolina Community College System. Located in the northwestern foothills of North Carolina, Surry Community College operates a main campus in Dobson and campus centers in Yadkinville, Mount Airy, Pilot Mountain, and Elkin. Surry Community College has a diverse student body of approximately 3,500 and a corporate and continuing education enrollment of 18,000. Its students include high school graduates, business professionals, retirees, and individuals seeking new career paths or simply following a love of learning. With a full-time faculty and staff of 250, Surry Community College is recognized as one of America's leading community colleges for quality in instruction, organization, and innovative and leading-edge programs. It was the first community college in the southeastern United States to offer a degree program in viticulture and enology and is now the home of the Shelton-Badgett North Carolina Center for Viticulture & Enology. Graduates of its nursing programs consistently lead the state in successful completion of licensing examinations. Surry Community College has thirty-six (36) areas of study, twenty-eight (28) of which offer academic and technical degree programs. Surry Community College not only has an articulated agreement with the University of North Carolina System for transfers to four-year degree programs, but also partners with both public and private colleges and universities (including Lees-McRae College, Gardner-Webb University, Winston Salem State University, and Appalachian State University) for on-campus instruction leading to the bacculerate degree. The Surry campus is the home of the Surry Early College High School of Design and the Yadkin campus is the home of the Yadkin Early College, each of which allows students to earn in five years both a high school diploma and an associate's degree. Surry Community College was one of only 11 North Carolina Community Colleges to attain exceptional status in 2009-2010. The College’s ranking was due to its performance on the progress of basic skills students; passing rates on licensure and certification for first-time test takers; performance of college transfer students; passing rates in developmental courses; success of developmental students in subsequent courses; student satisfaction; curriculum student retention, graduation, and transfer rates; and business and industry satisfaction with services provided. On April 25, 2011 the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program ranked Surry Community College as one of the nation's 120 best community colleges for its insistence on high standards for learning and college completion without delay, and for its serving as a training ground for jobs that pay competitive wages. Surry Community College has earned remarkable community support. Surry Community College plays a major role in economic development activities as reflected in partnerships with area businesses for focused industrial training, its Small Business Center, and customized training programs and facility-use agreements. Surry Community College has a history of fiscal stability, with a current operating budget of approximately $20,000,000.00. Endowments and scholarships are available to ensure financial support for students.
