Job Description

These two newly created positions are the result of a recent reorganization of the College’s academic unit wherein two divisions were created: Applied Studies and Arts and Sciences. Working under the direction of the Dean for Arts and Sciences, the Associate Deans may be assigned any or all of the following.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Staffing and Supervision – Interview and recommend for employment; assign work, supervise methods, evaluate outcomes, and recommend work improvement plans for personnel. Manage within the parameters of the collective bargaining agreement between the College and the faculty. Serve as a resource to the full-time faculty department or program chairs on a wide variety of issues and projects. Ensure that appropriate support is provided to faculty and staff of the division. Act to resolve conflicts among personnel. Encourage staff and faculty professional development.

Adjunct Staffing, Orientation, Development and Evaluation – Assist, as needed, the department and program chairs in ensuring adjunct staffing is completed within reasonable time frames and that potential staffing shortages are identified with sufficient time to conduct thorough recruitment and selection activities. Work with the full-time faculty department or program chairs to build a well-developed and up-to-date portfolio of potential adjunct instructors. As needed, provide administrative support to the hiring process by participating in interviews of potential adjunct instructors, conducting reference checks, evaluating credentials, etc. Responsible for ensuring new adjunct faculty are suitably oriented to the department and division and have access to and training on the materials, equipment and tools needed to perform. Conduct adjunct faculty classroom observations as needed. Review the classroom evaluations of adjunct faculty with the full-time faculty department or program chairs and discuss issues of concern. Facilitate and/or conduct performance feedback discussions with adjuncts. Encourage adjuncts to engage in College provided professional development.

Course Scheduling – Ensure the course schedule supports student success and maximizes College resources. Work with department or program chairs to recommend the addition or deletion of class sections to the schedule. Ensure course scheduling complies with the faculty collective bargaining agreement.

Ensure Adequacy and Availability of Resources – Monitor budget, seek faculty input for needed materials, equipment and tools, and source externally funded opportunities. Serve as a resource to the full-time faculty department or program chairs on a wide variety of issues and projects.

Program and Curriculum Review – Analyze data relative to programs and curriculum and make recommendations as needed. Remain current with the guidelines and requirements of the Higher Learning Commission, Ohio Board of Regents, the College’s Curriculum Committee, and other accrediting agencies. Research and recommend opportunities for new or enhanced certificates, degrees, articulations, and partnerships. Maintain accurate, complete and up-to-date files of division syllabi and related materials. Assist department and program chairs with preparing and updating brochures, catalogs, and web pages. Ensure the Counseling Department is current and familiar with division courses, programs and degree options.

Student Support – Assist students with questions and concerns related to the division departments, activities, and courses. Stay abreast and inform the dean and faculty of student issues and concerns.

Accreditation and Quality Initiatives – Support the efforts of the division to meet requirements and prepare reports as required by the college (Progress Center, DAPR, etc.) and/or accrediting agencies. Serve as a resource with respect to identifying and implementing quality improvements. Assist the college and division in gathering and analyzing data to support quality initiatives and division operations.

In order to contribute to the overall administration of the division, the Associate Dean will perform other duties at the request of the dean; actively participate on committees and task forces; work with other College departments on projects of mutual interest; develop and encourage synergy between departments and divisions; and integrate and promote the department’s and division’s engagement with College-wide initiatives such as:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Training and Experience

Master’s degree in one of the disciplines of the division (or a Bachelor’s degree in one of the disciplines plus a Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration). PhD in one of the disciplines of the division preferred.

Experience teaching at the college level, preferably in a community college and in one of the disciplines associated with the Division of Arts and Sciences

Experience managing a program or department in an institution of higher education

Experience with developmental/remedial coursework and instruction

Experience with identifying and securing funding from alternative sources (e.g., grants, foundations, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: 1) recent developments, best practices and current trends in higher education and community colleges in particular; 2) data informed decision making techniques and quality improvement initiatives applicable to higher education and community colleges in particular; 3) external sources of funding including grants and foundations

Well-developed skills including: 1) planning, organizing and budgeting; 2) supervising and leading;

3) communicating verbally and in writing

Ability (and willingness) to: 1) engage others and work effectively with a wide range of internal and external constituents; 2) collaborate within and across departments and divisions to identify creative solutions to problems; 3) multi-task and prioritize work and interpret and apply federal and state legislation, accreditation standards, and College policies and procedures
