Thomas Nelson Community College, founded in 1967, is a comprehensive community college offering a variety of programs of study leading to an associate’s degree, certificate, or career studies certificate. In addition to the many popular transfer degree programs, the College is known for its strong technical and pre-professional programs and its outreach to the community as a partner and leader in workforce development. Thomas Nelson serves over 16,000 students each year in credit instruction and over 10,000 in non-credit instruction and workforce services. The College is served by over 110 full- time faculty, 500 adjunct faculty, and 319 staff members. The College has two campuses: one in Hampton and the Historic Triangle Campus located in Williamsburg. The College also has a satellite site at the Southeast Higher Education Center in Newport News.
Thomas Nelson is currently seeking an administrator with demonstrated accomplishments to serve as the Provost of the Historic Triangle Campus. This position is the Chief Administrative Officer and the lead academic and student affairs administrator for a campus that serves roughly 3,200 students annually in a 120,000 square foot, three-story, state-of-the- art facility, which opened in 2009. Located on a 77-acre site, the campus has room for significant growth as it continues in its primary mission to serve the higher education and workforce training needs of Williamsburg and the surrounding communities. The Provost reports directly to the President of Thomas Nelson, Dr. John T. Dever, and serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet. In conjunction with the appropriate vice president or director, the Provost provides oversight for all instructional offerings, workforce training, student services, academic support services, facility management, safety and security, faculty support, information technology infrastructure, and other functions and operations that occur at the campus. Additionally, the Provost builds and maintains strong relationships with the many communities served by the campus, including civic groups, business and industry, and other educational institutions.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will be committed to the mission of a comprehensive community college, to excellence in the delivery of instruction and services to student success, and to diversity and inclusion within the college community. S/he will demonstrate a record of leadership accomplishments within a collegial environment and must be able to work productively with internal and external constituencies as well as execute successfully on key decisions. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. S/he should possess an understanding of higher education policy and standards as well as a familiarity with best practices and innovative strategies in community colleges. An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited university is required.
