The Northeast Higher Education District seeks a visionary leader to work with faculty, staff, students, and the community of the district’s five colleges to advance higher education in Minnesota’s northeastern region through collaboration, accountability, and innovation.
The Northeast Higher Education District (NHED) is a consortium of five community and technical colleges in northeastern Minnesota led by a single president. The consortium was launched in 1999 by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) to provide unified leadership, promote academic cooperation, and maximize educational resources in the region. The five participating colleges are:
- Hibbing Community College, Hibbing
- Itasca Community College, Grand Rapids
- Mesabi Range College, Eveleth and Virginia
- Rainy River Community College, International Falls
- Vermilion Community College, Ely
Each college is led by a provost and retains its unique identity and accreditation. Working together, the colleges serve more than 7,000 students in credit courses annually and provide a variety of educational programs and delivery options.
The president helps the five colleges meet the region’s needs. The colleges hare services, including human resources; institutional research; grant writing; financial oversight; and management of a federal TRIO Student Support Services grant.
NHED’s offices are located in Virginia, Minnesota, in the heart of the Arrowhead region and the Iron Range. This spectacular landscape is home to the headwaters of the Mississippi, Voyagers National Park, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, the Chippewa National Forest, and the Superior National Forest. Towering forests, pristine waterways, and rugged terrain make this region a national destination for outdoor activities in both summer and winter.
NHED is a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system. With 24 two-year colleges and seven state universities, MnSCU is the largest provider of higher education in the state of Minnesota. Under the leadership of Chancellor Steven Rosenstone, MnSCU is committed to ensuring access to an extraordinary education for all Minnesotans; being the partner of choice to meet Minnesota’s workforce and community needs; and delivering to students, employers, communities, and taxpayers the highest value, most affordable option.
Reporting to the chancellor, the president of NHED serves as chief executive officer responsible for leading the faculty and staff in fulfilling NHED’s mission. The president serves on the system’s leadership council, which consists of the chancellor, the chancellor’s cabinet, and the 31 college and university presidents. As a member of the leadership council, the president contributes to the overall direction of the nation’s fifth-largest system of higher education.
The successful candidate will be a strong leader and proponent of the community and technical college missions, with a demonstrated commitment to student success. While progressive responsibility in higher education administration is desirable, comparable experience in business, government, etc. will be considered. A terminal degree is preferred but not required.
