North Country Community College is soliciting nominations, referrals and applications for the position of Dean of Admissions. This is a newly created position aligned with the strategic direction of the College. Under the leadership of its 6th president, Dr. Steven Tyrell, the College is currently engaged in active revitalization and expansion of academic programs, a rebranding project, new student services initiatives, and solicitation of capital funding – all in support of growing and stabilizing enrollment.
The College, part of the State University of New York, proudly hosts three campuses – in Saranac Lake, Malone and Ticonderoga - as the only institution of higher education within the Adirondack Park. For nearly half a century, North Country has served as a primary workforce provider and opportunity for educational attainment for the residents of Essex and Franklin counties. Now, the College also attracts students from across New York State, bordering states, and international students from Canada, Europe and Australia.
This position is based in Saranac Lake. Saranac Lake’s historic downtown is home to art galleries and studios, restaurants, and shops on the edge of Lake Flower. Boating, hiking, skiing, fishing, and a multitude of other outdoor activities provide recreational outlets in the region year-round. Just five miles from Lake Placid, North Country was the official College of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Saranac Lake is served by the Adirondack Regional Airport, connecting the area with direct flights to Boston’s Logan Airport, and is an easy drive to Albany, Syracuse, Burlington, and Montreal.
After a series of intra-campus conversations, the College has identified six core strengths, which comprise the focus of the new brand: 1) faculty interaction with students across all curricula; 2) applied learning; 3) transfer success into baccalaureate programs; 4) employability of graduates; 5) location in the Adirondacks; 6) affordability and quality of education.
The Dean of Admissions is a senior level position reporting directly to the President and sitting on the President’s Council. The Dean will play a leadership role in the implementation of the College’s strategic plan, and will be a vital collaborator with Academic Affairs, Marketing, Student Services, and others to unify the campus towards its enrollment goals. The Dean will build a student recruitment plan to support North Country’s flagship programs and niche programs in a segmented marketing approach that is also mindful of enrollment needs on each campus. The Dean will be a contributor towards strengthened retention initiatives.
S/he must have a strong orientation and knowledge of the community college experience and/or non-traditional students and will have demonstrated experience in market segmentation, student recruitment planning, quantitative analysis of strategy effectiveness, and high-quality service delivery.
This individual will possess strong systems and process thinking – the ability to optimize, streamline, and improve the student recruitment cycle experience from inquiry to application, to registration – and a data-driven bias towards goal setting, tracking and accountability. S/he will demonstrate strong leadership ability in motivating an admissions team. As a result, this individual will also possess a range of personal attributes – flexibility and adaptability; a strong work ethic; self-motivation with minimal supervision; an ability to evaluate and improve team and individual performance; excellent presentation skills; willingness to take responsibility for both success and failure; self-confidence and a positive attitude; effective listening and questioning; sincerity, trust, credibility and warmth; and a strong desire for success. The Dean must be an effective collaborator with faculty and other key constituents that contribute to the College’s overall success with enrollment.
