Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC), Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, was established in 1964 and remains the largest and oldest of the state’s 14 community colleges. With campuses in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York as well as off-site learning locations, HACC serves roughly 50,000 credit and non-credit students and offers nearly 200 degree and certificate programs as well as numerous workforce development programs. Led by a dynamic, entrepreneurial President in John J. “Ski” Sygielski, who previously chaired the board for the American Association of Community Colleges, HACC is committed to being the first choice for students seeking a quality, accessible higher education. The Associate Provost will support the “one-college concept,” which is instrumental in ensuring a positive working relationship between the Office of Workforce Development and other academic and operational departments.

Environment: Harrisburg, the capital of the Commonwealth, is a diverse city with nearly 50,000 residents in its municipal boundaries and over 500,000 within its metropolitan area. The seat of both state and county government, and housing a number of regional federal offices, the city plays host to thousands of visitors daily. Tens of thousands of tourists annually visit Pennsylvania Dutch country, Hershey Park, the National Civil War Museum, the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center, and other local and regional attractions and cultural venues. Numerous state and national parks and recreation areas take advantage of the bordering Susquehanna River, and there are active regional professional and semi-professional teams playing hockey, soccer, basketball, and football, as well as the Harrisburg Senators baseball club, an affiliate of the Washington Nationals. With a moderate cost of living, temperate climate, good public schools, a wide selection of private secondary and post-secondary educational options, world class health care systems, and easy transportation to the major cities of the eastern seaboard, the Harrisburg-Carlisle metropolitan area was, in 2010, named by Forbes magazine as the second best place in the United States to raise a family.
