Job Description

Herkimer County College Foundation (HCCF), a nonprofit organization that supports Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, NY, is seeking a dynamic and effective development professional to serve as Executive Director.

The College

Herkimer County Community College provides approximately 3,500 students annually with high quality, accessible educational opportunities and services under the leadership of President Ann Marie Murray. The College offers more than 41 associate degree programs and three certificates in the areas of art, business, music and media, technology, criminal justice and law, education, healthcare, liberal arts and sciences.  Eighteen degrees, three certificates, and a range of support services are available online, making it convenient for working adult students to pursue degrees to enhance their skills.  The College is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and operates under the authority of the State University of New York.  Please see www.herkimer.edu.

 

Over seventy percent of the student body comes from outside the County.  More than 600 students live in apartment-style housing on campus, making Herkimer one of the largest residential community colleges. The College provides a wide variety of post secondary education and lifelong learning opportunities while supporting workforce development in the region.  It contributes an economic impact of approximately $75 million to Herkimer County annually. 

 

Approximately 2/3 of the graduates continue their educations at four-year colleges and universities, and in 2012, Herkimer was ranked by CNNMoney as one of the top 100 community colleges in the nation for student success.  Small classes, personal attention, support services, and a nationally ranked athletic program make Herkimer a first-choice option for quality education.

 

The Foundation

Established in 1967, Herkimer County College Foundation supports Herkimer County Community College through the acquisition of private funds and real property.  The Foundation plays a vital role in the enhancement of campus life as well as assuring that the College continues its demonstrated commitment to higher education.

 

The Foundation

§         has developed over 90 scholarship programs that award more than $150,000 annually to deserving students.

§         has been instrumental in the development of student housing adjacent to the campus and in the acquisition of land for future campus expansion.

§         awards grants each year to faculty and staff for ongoing professional development and independent research.

§         invests in College programs such as instructional technology, graduation activities and awards events.

 

Foundation activities include annual fundraising events such as the golf tournament, President’s Gala, Herkimer County Arts and Crafts Fair as well as recognition events.  The Partners in Education program recognizes businesses, groups and private individuals who provide generous annual support.  The Foundation also assists donors who wish to endow funds to support students.

The Position

As a member of the President’s Executive Team, the Executive Director will work collaboratively with the College administration and the Foundation Board and its committees to meet the demands of the strategic plan.  S/he will oversee 2.5 staff positions, an annual operating budget of approximately $500,000 and an endowment approaching $3 million.

 

Specific Responsibilities

Fundraising

§         Primary responsibility for research, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and sponsors to increase the endowment
§         Personally solicit donors and sponsors
§         Establish a donor database and donor recognition activities
§         Develop draft proposals, compile support documentation, finalize application materials and work with grant project managers to assure compliance with grant requirements
§         Oversee all types of fundraising including events, individual, corporate and foundation solicitations, direct mail fundraising, and planned giving

§         Develop and implement strategic plans to include capital campaigns and fundraising activities

Management

§         Identify candidates for employment, supervise and develop Foundation employees, supporting and inspiring a team culture of achievement

§         Oversee the Foundation including constituent communication, board and committee operations and preparation of the operating and fundraising budgets

External Relations

§         Represent the College, Foundation and Alumni at meetings and special occasions as assigned.

The successful candidate will be a proven performer with a passion for development.  S/he will be an outstanding communicator and planner with a commitment to excellence and comfort with people of all backgrounds.  Characteristics desired include: 

§         Record of significant career achievements in all aspects of development including capital campaigns, major gifts, corporate/foundation relations, annual giving, events and planned giving
§         Ability to work effectively with individual donors, corporations and foundations, alumni, campus administrators and staff
§         Effective interpersonal and organizational skills
§         Personal integrity and high ethical standards 
§         Strong writing, technical, communication, budgeting, and grant management skills

§         Bachelors degree required; advanced degree preferred
