The Virginia Community College System invites applications and nominations for the President of Blue Ridge Community College. The college is located in Weyers Cave, Virginia in the heart of the scenic Shenandoah Valley, bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and Allegheny Mountains to the west and which includes the famous Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. The area is noted for its majestic natural beauty, wide-ranging cultural attractions and high quality of life. The college is situated ten miles from both the cities of Harrisonburg and Staunton, and is within a two hour’s drive of the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. and the state’s capital in Richmond.
Founded in 1967, Blue Ridge Community College serves area cities including Waynesboro, Staunton, and Harrisonburg. It also has off-campus centers located in Fishersville and Harrisonburg. It is a comprehensive community college with nearly 4,500 total students and a FTE of almost 3,000 students. The operating budget is approximately $17 million, and its Educational Foundation has assets over $5 million. The college offers 20 associate degree and 40 certificate programs, and serves a variety of businesses with workforce training programs, and has a large number of dual enrollment students. The college has also increased in its size and diversity in recent years.
Blue Ridge is widely recognized for and committed to instructional and institutional excellence with students who have received national recognition. The campus community is characterized by its vision-based, student-centered values, collegial faculty and staff, family-oriented culture, and philosophy of collaborative governance. The next president must lead the college to increase its presence and active, visible participation in regional workforce development while expanding workforce training services. The college aims to progress through thoughtful, creative innovation in the delivery of effective programs and services to increase access to citizens of all ages and circumstances. It also seeks to strengthen the collection, analysis, and application of institutional data through an empirical process, for more effective use in institutional self-evaluation, quality assurance, and strategic planning. Its goals include increasing support and expanding outreach efforts in the community, building partnerships with local high schools, 2-year and four-year institutions and other organizations at the local, state and national level.
Qualified candidates will have an earned doctorate and demonstrated successful senior executive experience at the highest levels. Previous experience must include significant responsibility for programs, budgets, personnel, facilities and other appropriate administrative duties. An understanding of the mission and goals of a comprehensive community college in the 21st Century is essential. The candidate should have proven leadership abilities along with excellent communications skills, a clear commitment to instruction, a strong belief in a collaborative administrative style as well as a servant leadership perspective. The candidate must also have a broad vision for the College together with the skills and energy for implementation in addition to the demonstrated ability to work with business, industry, government and the community at large.
