PRESIDENTIAL SEARCH

Company

Nassau Community College

Location

Garden City, NY

Job Description

Nassau Community College (NCC) announces a national search for the position of President. NCC, a unit of the 64-campus State University of New York (SUNY), is a publicly supported community college providing educational access and opportunity for students on Long Island. NCC, the largest single-campus community college in the state of New York, maintains a nationwide reputation for academic excellence and ease of transferability to four-year institutions. The College offers the A.A. degree in Liberal Arts focused on humanities and social sciences, the A.S. degree in Liberal Arts emphasizing mathematics and laboratory sciences, specialized A.A. and A.S. transfer degrees, and A.A.S. degrees and certificate programs designed to serve immediate employment goals of students. NCC currently enrolls approximately 36,000 students in its degree, certificate, professional studies and continuing education programs. The College employs more than 1,100 full-time faculty and staff, and has an operating budget of $196 million.

NCC opened its doors in 1960 with just over 600 students enrolled. Two years later, it was given 135 acres and several buildings on the site of the former Mitchel Air Force Base in Garden City. Today, NCC includes 47 buildings on 225 acres, providing a campus experience while located just 27 miles from New York City. Approximately 20% of college-bound, high-school graduates in Nassau County enroll at NCC, and 70% of NCC graduates continue their education at four-year institutions. The College has the largest Honors program in the SUNY system, and the faculty, which includes more holders of doctoral degrees than any other community college in New York State, includes Fulbright Scholars, widely recognized academics, and creative artists.

The Board of Trustees seeks a highly committed, innovative and collaborative leader who will guide the College at this time of tremendous opportunity. The President, together with the Board, will set the agenda and strategic vision for the future of NCC. S/he will lead by example, enhancing the sense of community and intellectual environment of the College. As the chief ambassador for NCC, the president will strengthen partnerships and relationships with local government, alumni, area businesses, industry, and other educational institutions and organizations. The president will also acquire necessary financial resources from diverse sources.

Candidates for the position should have a track record of success in teaching/student services, internal management, strategic planning, finance administration, and development. S/he must act as an advocate for 2-year education, both inside and outside the classroom, as well as have an understanding of and commitment to supporting diversity. Prior experience in a collaborative union setting and a commitment to shared governance are highly desirable. Experience in the administration of large, complex organizations is required. An earned doctoral degree is preferred.

The NCC Board of Trustees has appointed a search committee and retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the recruitment of the new President. Confidential inquiries, referrals, and nominations should be sent with a cover letter to: Michelle Cruz-Williams, Vice President and Director or Jessica King, Senior Associate, ISAACSON, MILLER, 334 Boylston Street, Suite 500, Boston, Massachusetts 02116, Tel: 617-262-6500, 3798@imsearch.com (Email submission is strongly encouraged).
