DEAN OF COMMUNICATIONS, HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
THOMAS NELSON COMMUNITY COLLEGE is a comprehensive, multi-campus community college in historic southeastern Virginia at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. It serves the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg and the counties of York and James City. The College had an annual enrollment of 16,306 headcount and 7,179 FTE.
Provides leadership for the division's 40 full-time faculty and for 125+ adjunct faculty and staff. The division includes courses in American Sign Language and interpreter training, computer arts, developmental and transfer English, English as a second language, education, geography, history, humanities, performing arts (music and theater), philosophy, photography, political science, psychology, religion, sociology, speech/communications, and world languages (Arabic, French, German, and Spanish). Program responsibilities include: AA Liberal Arts including specializations in English Education, Foreign Languages and International Studies; AS General Studies; AS Social Science including specialization in Education; AAA Fine Arts; AAS Computer Arts; AAS Photography including specialization in Visual Communications; Certificate in Communication Design Multi-Media; Certificate in General Education; Career Studies Certificate in related program and assigned discipline areas. Participates on College, state and community committees. Manages division budget. Collaborates and communicates effectively with instructional and College support services. Supervises scheduling of classes and classrooms. Assumes leadership for supporting faculty in employing current technologies for teaching and learning. Evaluates full-time faculty and staff. Participates in professional development to enhance professional knowledge and skills. Must be able to work at all campus locations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Successful candidate will possess the appropriate qualifications to teach at the rank of assistant professor or above in a transfer discipline of the College. Requirements for this rank include a Master's degree plus 24 additional graduate credits totaling a minimum of 27 graduate credits in the discipline. In addition, this position requires a demonstration of progressively more responsible college-level teaching and administrative experience. Supervision of teaching faculty. Must demonstrate strong interpersonal, written and oral communication and presentation skills. Demonstrated experience with the technologies of administration, classroom instruction and distance learning. Demonstrated commitment to the community college philosophy. Demonstrated commitment to teaching a diverse population. Demonstrated record of professional development. Excellent recommendations.
QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED: Earned Doctorate from an approved institution. Proven leadership in community college administration. Documented experience in strategic planning, budgeting, and relevancy and quality of curricular offerings. Experience in program development, course scheduling, professional development of faculty and staff, grant development, management of physical resources, and the supervision of faculty and staff. Documented experience with performing arts (music and theater).
Salary: $62,777 - $90,218
Rank and salary commensurate with education and experience.
