Kern Community College District

The President of Bakersfield College shall be responsible to the Chancellor of the Kern Community College District. As chief administrator of the College, the President has major responsibilities that include maintaining the policies, procedures, and regulations as set forth by the Chancellor, the Board of Trustees, the California Education Code, the Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges, and the general laws of California and of the United States. The President shall have the authority to delegate areas of responsibility as permitted by law and policies of the Board of Trustees.

The president of Bakersfield College will lead the way into Bakersfield College’s second century. The college’s rich tradition of education, athletics and community service spans 100 years, creating an environment ripe with opportunity to serve our diverse population. Given the current economic climate and sharp downturn in state funding of community colleges, Bakersfield College awaits a leader dedicated to addressing initiatives to strengthen this legendary institution.

The next Bakersfield College president will provide leadership for faculty, classified staff, and administration so that the college will:

  • Become an exemplary model for student access and achievement
  • Sustain continuous quality improvement of institutional effectiveness
  • Assess and improve student learning outcomes in general education, career technical education, and student development
  • Implement and regularly update the Educational Master Plan based on systematic planning, evaluation, informed decision making, and the allocation of resources
  • Promote the innovative use of technology for teaching and learning as well as operations
  • Pursue new revenue, such as grants and public-private partnerships
  • Attract and retain talented employees at every level who hold themselves accountable to high expectations, innovation and excellence
  • Collaborate with the colleges of the Kern Community College District as well as service-area schools, colleges and universities to meet the educational and workforce needs of the communities we serve

Education and Experience  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Teaching or student services experience in higher education
  • Minimum of three years recent senior-level administrative experience
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong community involvement
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and disability backgrounds of community college students and employees

  • Be action-oriented, address matters in a timely manner and effectively delegate responsibility
  • Improve student access and academic success
  • Champion student life and attend student activities and college events
  • Pursue external partnerships and resources, including those developed through the College Foundation, to achieve strategic goals, priorities and goals of the Educational Master Plan
  • Embrace and respect the socioeconomic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity of the Bakersfield College community and the residents of the College’s service area
