Community College Views on Nursing Accreditation
12/5/2013 – AACC recently communicated with over 75 community colleges to garner a better understanding of the extent to which they are experiencing challenges with the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

How Is Your State Pursuing Future of Nursing Recommendations?
11/26/13 – In every state, Center to Champion Nursing in America State Action Coalitions are leading efforts to support and implement the Institute of Medicine (IOM) future of nursing report recommendations. Access information about state coalitions, such as composition (including community colleges), funding sources, meetings, and more on the Center’s website.

Dual Enrollment in Medical Sciences is a Model Program for Student Success
4/16/13 – In 2006, South Texas College developed the Dual Enrollment Medical Sciences Academy (DEMSA) to promote careers in the high-demand medical sciences field. High school juniors begin the program and earn an associate degree in biology by high school graduation. STC is a finalist for the American Association of Community Colleges' inaugural Awards of Excellence in the category of student success.

NN2 Survey on Trends, Needs In Health Professions Education
4/5/13 – The National Network of Health Programs in Two-Year Colleges (NN2) and Certified Background have joined with Melting Walls Consultants to conduct a qualitative study to gauge trends and needs in health professions education and the workforce. AACC member colleges are encouraged to take the survey. The results will provide community college health career program leaders and policymakers with best practices from peer institutions and identify possible barriers to address that may improve successful completion rates.

Researchers Assert Adequacy of Data Sources on Nursing
1/25/2013 – Nursing policymakers move into a future without the availability of federal data on the nation’s RN workforce. Last month, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and AARP’s Center to Champion Nursing in America convened an online discussion in which researchers asserted that existing data sources are adequate for analyzing the nursing workforce supply and demand, conducting longitudinal workforce studies, and making projections. Community College Baccalaureate Degrees in Health Professions
11/27/12 – Twenty-one states have authority to confer baccalaureates at community colleges under certain circumstances, such as state workforce shortages in nursing, technology or business. Community colleges in six states now offer nearly 40 baccalaureate programs in nursing and allied health, applied science and science degrees.

8/27/2012 – Access HPEC’s Pocket Card (PDF)—quick talking points supported with a detailed Information Series (PDF)—to strengthen your communications about the value of the Associate Degree in Nursing. A companion Information Series consists of five fact sheets—on topics such as RN licensure, hospital Magnet Recognition Programs®, community college RN preparation and inconclusive research on which the 80% BSN by 2020 Future of Nursing recommendation is based—so that users may choose to print the Series in its entirety, a topical Fact Sheet and/or the Pocket Card.

“Discontinued” Data: RN Data Lapses With No Alternative in Place
8/27/2012 – HRSA has discontinued the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (NSSRN) that has national data about nursing education and practice, along with workforce trends. Nurse researchers warn that losing the survey means policymakers will struggle to make nursing workforce predictions without data sources in place. The state boards of nursing say they wish to provide “better” data, but state data collections vary so that national data drawn from the states is difficult to standardize.
