The Freeman ASSIST Program -- Funding is available to outstanding international students from East and Southeast Asia who are pursuing summer internships in the U.S. nonprofit sector. Applicants must be undergraduate students who are currently enrolled in a U.S. college or university.  Undergraduate students from Brunei, Cambodia, China, East Timor, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand or Vietnam who secure internships with U.S not-for-profit organizations during the summer of 2008 are eligible. The program seeks to facilitate greater interaction between young Asian students and U.S. non-profit and community groups by creating paths for sharing experiences and enhancing mutual understanding.  For more information and an online application, see http://www.iie.org/programs/freemanassist or email FreemanASSIST@iie.org.

Higher Education for Development (HED), in cooperation with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has currently issued several Requests for Applications and will issue several more in spring 2008. Applicants from U.S. higher education institutions are needed to work with their counterparts in developing countries on programs focusing on economic growth, governance, education, the environment, and health. Current RFA anticipates making the following grant awards:

  • Middle East and North Africa -- Five awards of up to $285,000 each is anticipated for three-year higher education partnerships in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region focusing on one of the following target areas: 1) Business Administration or Economics, 2) Journalism and Mass Communication, 3) Political Science, 4) Teacher Education, and 5) Women's Empowerment.   • Jordan -- One award of up to $450,000 for this three-year higher education partnership is anticipated.     • ONE AWARD in Strengthening ICT in Higher Education for Rural Development;
    • THREE AWARDS in Rule of Law (two regarding constitutional reforms in Mexico, one regarding gender and indigenous languages);
    • TWO AWARDS in Conservation of Biodiversity and Economic Growth (one regarding linkages between small producers and financial services, one regarding forestry and sustainable economic opportunities);
    • ONE AWARD in English Language Education.
  • Burundi -- One award is anticipated, contingent on the availability of USAID funding, of up to $450,000 for a three-year partnership with the University of Ngozi to strengthen its capacity for teaching, applied research, and agricultural extension. Africa-U.S Higher Education Initiative will launch a Competitive Grants Program in which USAID will provide $1 million to fund 20 partnership planning grants of $50,000 each to plan long-term collaborations between African and U.S. institutions focused on building capacity for instruction and problem solving in six areas of study: agriculture, environment and natural resources; engineering; science and technology; health; education and teacher training; and business, management, and economics. The Africa-U.S. Higher Education Initiative is led by NASULGC with the Partnership to Cut Hunger and Poverty in Africa, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA), Higher Education for Development (HED), and the American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC) as key partners. More than a dozen other higher education organizations (including AACC), African embassies and other organizations are also participating.
