New Expeditions

The New Expeditions project set a vision and strategic direction for the nation's community colleges in the first part of the next century. Relying on input from the field and critical analysis of trends, the project culminated in a visionary report to challenge the colleges through a series of recommendations for action. The project's recommendations are outlined in its report, "The Knowledge Net: Connecting Communities, Learners, and Colleges," published in 2000.

Launched in April 1998, this 21-month project was sponsored by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), with funding from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Members of the AACC and ACCT board of directors' executive committees served on the New Expeditions Coordinating Committee. The two associations drew upon their collective capacity as information gatherers and conveners, engaging board members, advisory commissions, committees, affiliated councils, and partners in broad discussions and reflection. The project:

  • Documented the impact of Building Communities, the report of the Commission on the Future of Community Colleges;
  • Collected information through special issue papers, public hearings, focus groups, and field comments;
  • Analyzed findings and make recommendations;
  • Reported findings through print, electronic, and other media;
  • Showcased examples of possible implementation approaches.

For more background information, see the New Expeditions Issues Papers on faculty, finance, global awareness, governance, market forces, teaching and learning, and technology.
