AACC Past Projects Beacon Colleges Contact: Lynn Barnett summary: After six productive years, the American Association of Community Colleges brought its Beacon College Project to a close in 1995. By that year, 26 Beacon colleges had engaged nearly 600 institutions including 250 community colleges and some 130,000 individuals in 36 states in the Beacon College Project. The $1.7 million grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation had leveraged more than $7 million in local communities. Community Based Nursing Contact: Lynn Barnett summary: Five community college associate degree nursing programs ventured into new ways of teaching and, at the same time, meeting community needs in projects supported by AACC and seed money from the Metropolitan Life Foundation from January 1995 through January 1996. From an applicant pool of 85 colleges, the five selected institutions shaped initiatives that would address community needs and demonstrated strong partnerships with local health care providers. In all, they featured community service, service learning, community development, curriculum development, student recruitment and retention, and other activities. Disability Support Services Contact: Lynn Barnett summary: In a stiff national competition, four community colleges and four mentors were selected in November 1995 to participate in a Department of Education-funded project, "Improving Disability Support Services (DSS) in Community Colleges." The American Association of Community Colleges implemented the pilot project.
