Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count Contact: Lynn Barnett Summary: Lumina Foundation for Education has launched a new initiative to address a national imperative: increasing success for the growing number of students for whom community colleges are the point of entry into higher education, particularly low-income students and students of color. Advanced Technological Education Contact: Ellen Hause Summary: The National Science Foundation's Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program provides grants to improve and expand educational programs that prepare skilled technicians to work in the high-tech fields that drive the U.S. economy. The program is Congressionally mandated and focuses on undergraduate and secondary school education. AACC hosts an annual ATE grant-project directors' conference and sponsors an ATE Mentoring Program for community colleges. America's Promise Contact: Ellen Hause Summary: AACC joined America's Promise as the first national higher education association to make a "commitment" to community service. AACC encourages all member colleges to join America's Promise and make a commitment to improve the lives of young people nationwide. Bridges to Healthy Communities 2005 Contact: Quintin Doromal Summary: The Bridges project features service learning as a core strategy to prevent HIV infection and other important health problems among youth. Center for Workforce and Economic Development Contact: Carolyn Teich Summary: The Center for Workforce and Economic Development was established to help community colleges better collaborate with workforce boards, economic development entities, labor market intermediaries, and other community organizations to improve the prosperity of business, workers, and communities. Faces of the Future Contact: Kent Phillippe Summary: AACC and partner ACT, Inc., produced the first annual national Faces of the Future Survey, which provides information about credit and noncredit community college students. It explores the role the college plays in the life of the student. Horizons Service Learning Project Contact: Gail Robinson Summary: AACC's Community Colleges Broadening Horizons through Service Learning project seeks to integrate service learning across the curriculum through model programs, workshops, publications, and technical assistance. Leading Forward Contact: Lynn Barnett and Margaret Rivera Summary: Leading Forward is a W.K. Kellogg Foundation funded project to address the growing leadership gap at America's community colleges. MentorLinks Contact: Ellen Hause Summary: The MentorLinks program, developed with the support of the National Science Foundation, is designed for community colleges that could benefit from technical assistance and networking opportunities to improve undergraduate education that prepares technicians in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.
Market-Responsive Community Colleges Contact: Jim McKenney Summary: The Center for Workforce Preparation (CWP), in partnership with the American Association of Community Colleges, is developing a comprehensive guide for community colleges and chambers of commerce to create effective workforce development partnerships. New Expeditions Contact: Lynn Barnett Summary: New Expeditions set a vision and strategic direction for the nation's community colleges in its report, "The Knowledge Net: Connecting Communities, Learners, and Colleges." The project was co-sponsored by AACC and the Association of Community College Trustees, with funding from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation. Pathways to College Network Contact: Jim McKenney Summary: The Pathways to College Network, an alliance of national organizations including AACC, has issued a challenge to leaders and stakeholders in education to increase their efforts to make a college education a realistic goal for all Americans. A Shared Agenda: A Leadership Challenge to Improve College Access and Success outlines specific actions leaders can take to advance college access and success for the many underserved students in this country. Pathways to Technology Contact: Ellen Hause Summary: Pathways to Technology is a multimedia project highlighting technology degree programs at community colleges. The Pathways to Technology Web site, video series, recruitment toolkit, and outreach initiative are designed for prospective students, returning students, parents, guidance counselors, and community college educators. The site includes information about technology fields and degree programs, technology jobs, success stories. Plus 50 Initiative Contact: Mary Sue Vickers The AACC Plus 50 Initiative is a 3 1/2 year effort to identify a pilot group of two-year institutions that will create or expand campus programs to engage the 50+ population in learning: training/re-training programs; and/or volunteer, civic, service activities. Project Reach: Service Inclusion for Community College Students Contact: Quintin Doromal or Faith San Felice Summary: Project Reach is a three-year national initiative of AACC through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service and its Engaging Persons with Disabilities, New Special Initiatives Program. Eight community colleges received grant awards to develop opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in service learning and learn life skills that will have an impact on their employment, careers, and personal development. Rural Community College Initiative Contact: Lynn Barnett Summary: The Rural Community College Initiative supported by the Ford Foundation, aims to enhance the capacity of community colleges in specific distressed rural areas to expand access to post-secondary education and help foster regional economic development. SBC Excelerator Project Contact: Frances Villagran-Glover With support from the SBC Foundation, AACC, in partnership with six community colleges around the country, have designed and implemented information technology (IT) training programs to create a more skilled workforce. Teaching by Choice Contact: Faith San Felice With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF), AACC, in partnership with the National Association of Community College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) and the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), developed Teaching by Choice (TBC): Addressing the National Teacher Shortage. Working Connections IT Faculty Development Institute Contact: Lynn Barnett Summary: Microsoft Corporation, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), and Bellevue Community College’s National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies (NWCET) have formed an alliance to develop a systematic, nationwide plan for community and technical college faculty development in the field of information technology (IT).
