America Counts
America Counts is a U.S. Department of Education initiative to help all students master challenging mathematics, including the foundations of algebra and geometry, by the end of 8th grade. Beginning in July 1999, America Counts will allow colleges and universities to support mathematics tutoring by eligible federal work-study college students to students in grades K-9.

America Reads
The goal of the America Reads Challenge is to ensure that every child can read independently by the end of the third grade. To achieve this goal, the President called for a substantial increase in the number of tutors and mentors available to young children.

Communities in Schools
Communities In Schools is the nation's largest stay-in-school network. Through national, state, and local offices, CIS connects schools with the resources that the students need most. CIS brings existing resources, services, parents and volunteers into a school, to meet children's needs so that they can concentrate on learning.

Expanding Federal Work-Study and Community Service Opportunities
The Federal Work-Study (FWS) Resource Guide from the U.S. Department of Education outlines the legal community service requirements for campuses receiving FWS funds. The guide includes information on how to meet those mandates and a resource section providing examples of exemplary programs and a list of resources for campuses to use as they ready themselves to assume the challenges of community service

Federal Resources for Educational Excellence (FREE)
FREE is a database of links to federally supported on-line teaching and learning education resources. More than 30 federal agencies formed a working group to make hundreds of federally supported education resources available at this web site.

ImpactOnline
ImpactOnline provides information and resources on developing Virtual Volunteer programs. Virtual volunteer programs involve activities like on-line mentoring and web site development assistance that can be completed via internet by a volunteer off-site. Virtual volunteering allows organizations to expand the benefits of their volunteer programs, by allowing more volunteers to participate, and by utilizing volunteers in new areas.

Project America
Project America is a non-profit organization providing the resources individuals, and organizations need to take positive steps in their communities. Project America also offers an online database of service opportunities nationwide.

Think College Early
The Think College Early web site provides information on eductional opportunities beyond high school, focusing specifically on students in middle school, their parents, and teachers. The site includes information about financial aid for college, the core academic courses needed for college, career awareness, and other resources.

Yes, You Can: A Guide for Establishing Mentoring Programs to Prepare Youth for College
This extensive new guide, published by the Department of Education provides a number of models, resources, and suggestions for planning mentoring programs.
