Community College Centennial Kit

Celebrating A Century Of Innovation In Higher Education 1901 -2001

Introduction

In 2001, America’s community colleges will celebrate 100 years of service and achievement. This year-long celebration presents community colleges with an unparalleled opportunity to tell their stories of innovation, adaptation, and success to education consumers, national and local media, policymakers, and the general public.

To make the Centennial year a success we will need the participation of community colleges nationwide – there is no celebration without you! There are important reasons why you should enlist the resources and talent of your institution to join us in this celebration.

  • The Centennial is an opportunity to capitalize on the growing recognition of community colleges. Telling our success stories will help continue the good will we have begun to earn from the business community, workers, policymakers, and others. It is an opportunity to substantially raise both our visibility and our credibility.

  • Celebrating our successes may help you meet fundraising objectives. The Centennial events will help raise awareness and recognition for the institu-tions that participate in the celebration. Citing recent accomplishments ultimately will help potential grant-makers and private philanthropists understand the value you bring to the community of learners.

  • Celebrating our successes may help enrollment objectives. Among the audiences for publicity surrounding the Centennial will be high school administrators, guidance counselors, parents, and students. Raising the visibility of your institution and its accomplishments can help sustain or augment enrollment objectives.

  • The Centennial can be used to raise your institution’s profile with policymakers. Policymakers –even those who already support your mission – need constant reminders of your role and track record. The Centennial is a vehicle for reinforcing the positive messages that can fuel increased awareness and funding.
