2008 Pre-convention Workshops AACC offers seven pre-convention workshops on a variety of topics just prior to the start of the annual meeting on Friday and Saturday. They are a chance to explore in-depth several pertinent areas that affect community college leadership and management. Please note, you MUST be registered for the Convention to register for a pre-convention workshop. Online registration is closed. If you have not yet registered, you can do so on-site at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, West Bridge area. Registration opens on Friday, April 4 at noon. The New Presidents Institute: Hit the Ground Leading, is a day and a half of meaty information and exchanges designed only for first-time CEOs. Meet with your peers in a learning environment that is supportive and serious, open and honest, productive and informative. Sessions include topics such as developing positive board relations, mastering advocacy, problem solving, fostering the college mission and understanding college finances. Seasoned presidents and presidents still somewhat new to the job will provide you with insights from their various perspectives and answer your most pressing questions. The workshop includes a breakfast, lunch, snacks, materials, and an outstanding faculty. Workshop B: Interviewing for the Presidency and Preparing to Work with and For a Board of Trustees (Sponsored by the Association of Community College Trustees) Friday, April 4, 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm and Saturday, April 5, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm Fee: $200
This two-part workshop provides a valuable simulation of the presidential interview process and insights into how community college boards of trustees function. Practice interviewing in a typical presidential candidate/search committee or board interview session; learn how to present yourself in ways that are uniquely yours and capitalize on outstanding qualities that make you the candidate of choice; and critique your videotaped interview with presidential experts. The workshop also provides valuable information on governance and how to prepare to work for a board of trustees, as well as learn what trustees look for when interviewing presidential candidates. Broaden your level of knowledge and understanding of the workings of board of trustees. Workshop C: Emergency Business Continuity Planning for Community Colleges Friday, April 4, 1:00 pm – 6:00 pm Fee: $200
Learn how to plan to continue operating your community college before, during, and after emergencies of all types. Better understand the business continuity planning process. Determine how to identify vulnerabilities and high impact emergencies and begin or expand on the design of a plan to prepare the college to effectively respond and recover from emergencies. Includes a course manual with information and useful forms. This workshop is modeled after training conducted at NorthWest Arkansas Community College and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security certified Business Continuity Planning course. Workshop D: Finance Basics for Successful Leaders (Co-sponsored by the Community College Business Officers and AACC's Future Leaders Institute) Saturday, April 5, 8:30 am – 11:30 am Fee: $200
Need to know how to improve performance, contain costs, extract greater outcomes from existing resources and demonstrate sound fiscal management? You’re not alone. This workshop will help you prepare to work with the principles that direct the business and finance operations of your community college. Solving difficult or mismanaged business and finance practices can pose a difficult challenge to a leader. Business and finance functions must operate within clear standards. This workshop provides the new or aspiring president with the insight necessary to comprehend the intricacies of the business and finance areas of a community college. Workshop E: Leveraging Data in Strategic Planning: Building Institutional Capacity for Accountability (Sponsored by Datatel and AACC in cooperation with the Community College Research Center) Saturday, April 5, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Fee: $200
Many institutions have extensive data resources but lack the capacity to apply that data to the challenges of institutional decision-making. The effective use of data to support strategic planning, accreditation and state policy decisions is an increasing challenge. This workshop assists participants to develop and utilize the institutional research capacity within their colleges using actual data they supply and work on during the session. This workshop is designed for graduates of the AACC Future Leaders Institute, presidents, vice presidents, deans and others who are interested in expanding their understanding of the effective use of research in strategic planning and institutional decision-making. Colleges are encouraged to send teams that include the president, chief academic officer and director of institutional research. Workshop F: Minority Males—An Endangered Species—Again (Sponsored by the National Council on Black American Affairs) Saturday, April 5, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm Fee: $200
A team of experienced community college leaders define some of the most critical aspects of the declining enrollment of minority males and identify a number of best practices and research findings suitable for various institutional types. Participate in small, in-depth group strategy sessions. Colleges are encouraged to bring institutional teams and specific issues. Workshop G: Thoughts and Clues for Aspiring Presidents (Sponsored by Gold Hill Associates) Saturday, April 5, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm Fee: $200

This proven workshop provides valuable information and insights about the qualifications, skills and attributes of the successful presidential aspirant, as well as the successful president. It explores ways to make your application stand out, discusses skills to develop now to prepare for a successful presidency, and points out common mistakes of first-time presidents and how to avoid them. A team of seasoned veterans and new CEOs will provide valuable insights from their varied perspectives and answer your questions about seeking your first community college presidency.
