National Corporate InitiativesThe Centers for Disease Control is working through AACC to implement a national HIV prevention program on campuses, with an emphasis on combining awareness efforts and community service. Coca-Cola supports the Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program created in 2000 through a grant from the Joseph B. Whitehead Foundation. Mr. Whitehead was one of the original bottlers of Coca-Cola. In keeping with Coca-Cola's long-standing commitment to post-secondary education, this program recognizes students attending two-year degree granting institutions for their unique contributions to community service and academic excellence. The manages the Higher Education Cooperative Purchase Consortium with more than 1800 participating colleges and universities, of which AACC is a member. These colleges purchase discounted products and services from more than 60 vendors. Microsoft Corporation has partnered with AACC in a $7 million, 5-year initiative to increase the number of skilled workers in Information technologies fields. The initiative will focus particularly on workers who are unemployed, dislocated, disabled or on welfare. Miller Brewing Company has partnered with AACC to expand its Tools for Success program nationally, providing support and recognition to outstanding students in technical fields. Peterson's has partnered with AACC to reduce the challenges associated with targeted recruitment. Peterson's Education and Guidance Resource Center will be made available to high school students, parents, and guidance counselors through exclusive sponsorships offered by community colleges. The combined efforts of AACC and Peterson's will enable students to obtain and request information about various institutions through the Resource Center, while concurrently allowing community colleges to actively recruit interested students. The U.S. Department of Labor is using community colleges as Internet "access zones" to America's Job Bank, a computerized listing of more than 500,000 job vacancies posted by employers in a broad range of fields. A second phase of the project will allow job seekers to list their resumes online at the colleges as part of a national, computerized Talent Bank.
