AACC celebrates the first century of community colleges with this pictorial tribute, which includes photographs from "America's Community Colleges: A Century of Innovation." These photos were submitted by community colleges across the nation and highlight a variety of programs along with inspiring stories of personal achievement.

Page 47 -- Jim Lehrer (left), a graduate of Victoria College in Texas, is executive editor and anchor of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS. A reporter since 1959, Lehrer has won two Emmys and in 1999 was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame.

Page 23 -- Craig Venter (right), an alumnus of California's College of San Mateo, developed a revolutionary strategy for gene sequencing. Having reached this milestone, which could eventually transform the understanding, treatment, and prevention of disease, Venter's next goal is to map the proteins that drive the body's chemical reactions.
