Interesting Facts

  • College of The Albemarle boasts four instructional locations dispersed across a 1,875 square mile service area covering northeastern North Carolina.  With seven counties within its service area, COA serves more counties than any other community college in the state.
  • In 2004 COA partnered with the YMCA of South Hampton Roads to build a shared use facility that serves as a YMCA and home to COA’s healthcare programs.  This year COA partnered with the YMCA to operate a golf course, pool and dining facility that were donated to the college.
  • In April 2014, College of The Albemarle and Currituck County received the North Carolina Community College System’s Distinguished Partners in Excellence Award for construction of the Regional Aviation and Technical Training Center.  COA is currently partnering with Currituck County to construct a joint use public safety operations and training center.
  • The College of The Albemarle was chartered on December 16, 1960, making it the oldest of the 58 public community colleges in North Carolina.
