Roane State has joined with area corporations such as Babcock & Wilcox Y-12, Tennessee Valley Authority, and GEM Technologies, Inc., to help train military veterans to work in engineering. The initiative provides an opportunity for military service members to complete their education and have a job waiting for them in an engineering career field in Tennessee. The program matches veterans’ service to country, discipline, and skills to the region’s future technical needs. The program includes community and corporate support for veterans while they are in school and guarantees veterans a STEM (science, technology, engineering or math) job upon graduation. The program began because area community leaders, industry leaders and education leaders recognized that Oak Ridge and Knoxville needed workers in technical skills such as engineering, but existing veterans programs did not provide support for them to achieve technical degrees.
Pellissippi State Community College also is part of the initiative.
