NFL Head Coach
Napa Valley College, CA
Dick Vermeil went to Napa Junior College because his high school football coach motivated him to think beyond working in his dad’s garage.
When he returned to the college, now known as Napa Valley College, as head football coach in 1963, he thought it would be his final move. He had already led two successful high school programs and worked as assistant coach at the College of San Mateo.
That was the beginning of Vermeil’s long career in football. Some of his career highlights include:
• Leading the St. Louis Rams to a Super Bowl victory in January 2000;
• Taking the Philadelphia Eagles to Super Bowl XV in January 1981;
• Being named NFL Coach of the Year in 1979 and 1999;
• Coaching the UCLA Bruins to a Rose Bowl victory over #1 ranked Ohio State University in 1976.
