Good governance requires the active participation of a group of people working together toward a common goal. The Exemplary CEO/Board Award recognizes effective collaboration between the board of trustees and the college CEO thereby advancing the college.

Halifax Community College (North Carolina)

Halifax Community College (HCC) serves two of the most destitute counties in North Carolina. Despite this, in 2013, HCC was ranked 12th among the 50 best community colleges in the nation by Washington Monthly.

Harford Community College (Maryland)

Members of the Harford Community College (HCC) Board of Trustees may have varying political beliefs, but they leave partisanship at the door and serve as a unified force to ensure the success of the college.

Lansing Community College (Michigan)

In 2008, Lansing Community College (LCC) was facing serious fiscal challenges as Michigan was hit hard by the recession. There was an unprecedented demand for services, but a lack of resources. At the same time, the college was recovering from a series of reputational setbacks that required institutional change. A leadership change in 2008 brought Brent Knight to the institution’s presidency.

Sinclair Community College (Ohio)

The key to Sinclair Community College’s exemplary CEO and board relationship revolves around a tight strategic focus to improve teaching and learning, accessibility, institutional sustainability, and community alignment. College President Steven Johnson credits the 11-member board’s “sincere dedication to strategy” for realizing accomplishments in those four areas.
